Experiences in Espedalen
Espedalen is a valley full of both natural wonders and history.
One of the most famous sites is the Helvete potholes – Norway’s wildest natural attraction. Here, ice and water have carved out enormous potholes in the rock over thousands of years. In the 18th century, the area was seen as so harsh and inaccessible that people believed it was the entrance to the underworld, and the name “Helvete” (Hell) has remained ever since.
From the cabin you can head straight out on ski touring trips. Popular destinations include Søre and Nordre Gråhøa (about 1300 m), Essetrøna and Jentfjellet, offering varied routes and spectacular views.
In summer you can swim by Espedalen Mountain Church, a serene spot also used for winter ice bathing.
On the property, darts and axe throwing provide extra fun for evenings with family and friends.
Other highlights in the area:
- Ruten (1517 m) – a mountain hike with panoramic views towards Jotunheimen and Rondane
- Espedalen Mountain Church – unique architecture and a place of reflection
- Old copper and nickel mines – historical hiking destinations around Espedalsvatnet
- Elgland – known for one of Europe’s largest elk migrations
- Fishing and paddling in lakes and rivers
- Cycling and hiking in varied terrain
